Rumor has it that in this morning’s tutorial on social computing applications, IBM trounced Microsoft in the head-to-head competition. This doesn’t surprise me–Connections is far more elegant and Web 2.0-ish than SharePoint–but I was surprised to hear it was such a lopsided fight.

Meanwhile, at the UC turorial I moderated in the afternoon, the Cisco rep acknowledged that Cisco has been “arrogant” about some of its communications plays in the past. As for the vendor’s forray into unified communications, he said, “Unified Personal Communicator is a very robust client with very few shipments.” UC is here, but as I’ve said often, it’s still years away from universal deployment.

And here’s a question for you: Did all the people who currently spend their time texting while in meetings and conference sessions used to pay attention, or did they just find other ways to pass the time before wireless, real-time communications?
